Lofoten sits above the Arctic Circle, but summer is a different Norway: warm sun, blooming meadows, the cicada-like sound of silence. Plus constant ocean wind and sudden weather changes. Standard summer clothing won't do — pack like for a moderate hike.
Summer climate
| Month | Day | Night | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| May | +8…+13 °C | +3…+7 °C | White nights, still cool |
| June | +10…+16 °C | +5…+10 °C | Sun doesn't set, blooming hillsides |
| July | +13…+18 °C | +8…+12 °C | Warmest month |
| August | +11…+16 °C | +6…+10 °C | Fjord water gets «warm» |
Rain — several times a week, wind 5–15 m/s almost always.
Clothing
Base layer
- Merino or synthetic thermal — 1 set (night hikes can get cool)
- T-shirts / long sleeves — 3–4 pieces, synthetic or merino
Mid layer
- Mid-weight fleece
- Light down jacket or primaloft vest (evening on the shore + sudden weather)
Outer layer
- Waterproof and windproof hardshell jacket (Gore-Tex) — mandatory
- Hardshell pants or waterproof trousers — for serious hikes
Bottoms
- Hiking pants 1–2 pairs (quick-dry)
- Shorts — for warm days
Footwear
You come to Lofoten to hike. Sneakers won't cut it.
- Hiking boots — waterproof, ankle support. Trails like Reinebringen are steep climbs over rocks and mud.
- Sneakers — for villages and cafés
- Sandals/slippers for the hut/cottage
- 4–5 pairs of warm merino socks
Camera and tech
- Camera + 2–3 spare batteries — white nights give an unreal «golden hour» from 23:00 to 02:00, you'll shoot a lot
- Memory cards 64+ GB
- Tripod — for shooting the never-setting sun and stars
- ND filter — for long exposures at fjords
- Microfiber for ocean spray
- Power bank 10,000 mAh
- Outlet adapter — standard EU Type F (Schuko)
White nights and sleep
Most common tourist problem: in Lofoten summer it never gets dark. Mid-May to mid-July, sun is up 24/7. Wrecks your circadian rhythm, hard to sleep.
Mandatory:
- Sleep mask — without one you won't sleep the first nights
- Earplugs
- Hotel rooms usually have blackout curtains, but not always tight
Documents
- Schengen visa (for citizens who need one — Norway is in Schengen)
- Passport + cloud copies
- Travel insurance with €30,000 coverage + activity coverage if hiking
- Flight tickets — printed
- Visa/Mastercard from 2 different banks — Norway is cashless
First aid kit
- Basics: paracetamol, ibuprofen, antihistamine
- Heel blister plasters — mandatory
- Lip balm, hand cream
- Sunscreen SPF 30+ (sun is brighter than it seems at this latitude)
- Insect repellent — summer has lots of midges in the forests
What NOT to bring
- Umbrella — wind will break it
- Jeans — soak through, don't dry
- Thin flip-flops for the beach — pebble beaches shred them
- Large amounts of cash — Norway is maximally cashless
- Suit / dress — outside Henningsvær and Bodø, Lofoten is 100% relaxed dress code
Quick checklist
- Hardshell jacket
- Hiking boots
- Sleep mask
- Spare socks
- Power bank + adapter
- Documents + insurance
- Plasters
- Sunscreen
- Microfiber for camera
- Swimsuit (for hotel hot tubs / spontaneous swims)
Luggage size: 15-18 kg suitcase + 8-10 kg backpack with daily gear is enough for 5-7 days.
