Ring Road (Route 1) is Iceland's circular road, 1,330 km. Can drive in 4 days (race), 7 days (normal), 8 days (optimal — buffer for weather and surprises), or 10+ days (with F-roads, Westfjords, slow pace). 8 days is the sweet spot.
Day 1: Reykjavik + Golden Circle
Arrive Keflavik. Pick up car. To Reykjavik (45 min). If early flight — Golden Circle same day. If late — day 1 in Reykjavik, Golden Circle moves to day 2.
Golden Circle — classic one-day route: Þingvellir (national park, tectonic rift), Geysir (geothermal zone), Gullfoss (two-tier waterfall). ~250 km loop from Reykjavik. Parking at Þingvellir €10, Gullfoss free.
Overnight: Reykjavik or Selfoss.
Day 2: South — waterfalls + black beach
Route: Reykjavik → Seljalandsfoss → Skógafoss → Reynisfjara → Vík
- Seljalandsfoss — waterfall you can walk behind. Parking €7
- Skógafoss — 60 m curtain, 527 steps to top
- Reynisfjara — black beach with basalt columns. Warning: sneaker waves have killed tourists — stay 30+ m from water

Overnight: Vík (limited hotel choices — book ahead).
Day 3: Vík → Jökulsárlón → Höfn
Route: Vík → Fjaðrárgljúfur → Skaftafell → Svartifoss → Jökulsárlón → Diamond Beach → Höfn (~370 km)

- Diamond Beach — next to Jökulsárlón, black sand with ice pieces
Overnight: Höfn.
Day 4: East fjords
The «slowest» day. Route: Höfn → Djúpivogur → Egilsstaðir (~260 km)
The road winds through east fjords. Few famous attractions, but fantastic views. Stops:

- Hengifoss — waterfall with red layers (hour-long hike)
Overnight: Egilsstaðir or Seyðisfjörður (if you want prettier).
Day 5: North — Mývatn + Dettifoss

- Krafla — geothermal zone with steaming craters
- Hverir — mud springs with sulfur smell
- Mývatn Nature Baths — northern Blue Lagoon equivalent, cheaper (€40), fewer people
Overnight: Reykjahlíð (by Mývatn) or Akureyri.
Day 6: Akureyri + Goðafoss
Route: Mývatn → Goðafoss → Akureyri (~100 km)
- Goðafoss — «waterfall of the gods», semicircular, legendary
- Akureyri — «Capital of the North», 19,000 residents. Botanical garden, cafés, church on hill
- Húsavík (+30 min from Akureyri) — best place for whale tour (€100-130)
Overnight: Akureyri.
Day 7: West — Snæfellsnes peninsula
Route: Akureyri → Snæfellsnes → Stykkishólmur (~400 km — longest day)
For a calmer pace — skip Snæfellsnes, go straight to Borgarnes, do the peninsula as a separate day (see separate guide).
Main points: Kirkjufell, Djúpalónssandur, Arnarstapi → Hellnar.
Overnight: Stykkishólmur or Borgarnes.
Day 8: Return + Blue Lagoon
