The most common question before an Iceland trip is «how much money to bring». Internet answers are usually vague: «expensive», «like Norway», «a lot». Doesn't help plan. Below — real 2026 prices broken down by category, plus three typical budgets for a 7-day trip.
All prices in euros (€). Local currency is the Icelandic króna (ISK), roughly 1 EUR = 150 ISK.
Flights
The biggest single expense and the only one you can really save on by booking ahead.

For an independent Iceland trip, a car is essential. Public transport outside Reykjavik is almost non-existent.

Fuel
Iceland fuel prices are among the highest in Europe. In 2026:
- Petrol 95 — ~€2.05/litre
- Diesel — ~€2.10/litre
- Gas stations — N1, Olis, ÓB, Orkan (last two are 5–10% cheaper)
Ring Road calculation (1,330 km around the island):
- Economy car (~6 L/100 km): 80 litres = €164
- SUV 4WD (~10 L/100 km): 133 litres = €273
- Big jeep (~14 L/100 km): 186 litres = €381
Accommodation
Prices vary by season. Summer (June–August) and Christmas are peak.

10 ways to save money
- Cook your own meals. Bónus + guesthouse kitchen saves €30–50/day.
- Travel in low season. October, November, February, March — hotels 30–40% cheaper, nature is the same.
- N1 hot dog. Local classic, €4 — a satisfying lunch.
- Local pools instead of Blue Lagoon. Any municipal pool (Laugardalslaug, Sundhöllin) — €10, no queues, with hot tubs.
- Free waterfalls and beaches. 90% of natural attractions cost nothing.
- Camping or camper van in summer. Saves on hotels, adds adventure. Iceland Camping Card — €179 for 28 nights at all campsites.
- Alcohol — Duty Free or Vínbúðin. Supermarkets don't sell it, bars charge €10+ for beer. Duty Free at arrival is cheapest.
- Vínbúðin closes early. If you want alcohol with dinner — buy during the day.
- Card pays everywhere — withdrawing cash from ATMs has bad rates.
- Tax-free shopping. Purchases over 6,000 ISK (€40) at one store — 14% VAT refund on departure.
NOMAP tours vs going solo
Our 5-day South Iceland tour — from €1,390 per person. Includes everything: transfers, car, accommodation, food, activities, tour leader.
An equivalent solo trip costs €1,200–1,400 per person — almost the same. But it requires:
- 50–100 hours of planning (route, car booking, hotels, activities)
- Stress with weather, contingency plans
- Risk of wasting a day if something is closed/booked
- Hunting aurora yourself at night in the cold
Numbers are nearly equal, but you get two different trips: a tourist scramble or a relaxed immersion.
