Iceland budget 2026 — real numbers with examples

Iceland is one of the most expensive countries in Europe. But if you know where to save — a trip doesn't turn into a financial disaster. Concrete numbers per category and three budget tiers.

The most common question before an Iceland trip is «how much money to bring». Internet answers are usually vague: «expensive», «like Norway», «a lot». Doesn't help plan. Below — real 2026 prices broken down by category, plus three typical budgets for a 7-day trip.

All prices in euros (€). Local currency is the Icelandic króna (ISK), roughly 1 EUR = 150 ISK.

Flights

The biggest single expense and the only one you can really save on by booking ahead.

Berlin / Frankfurt€100–250€200–500Wizz, Play
London / Manchester€80–200€160–400EasyJet, Play
Paris / Brussels€120–250€240–500Transavia
New York (East Coast US)€200–400€400–800Play, Icelandair
Toronto / Montreal€350–550€700–1100Icelandair
Tip. Icelandic low-cost airline Play flies from Europe and the US, from €70 one-way. Baggage and seat — extra. If you travel 7 days with one bag, it's fine.

Visa

Iceland is in the Schengen Area. Citizens of EU, UK, US, Canada, Australia, NZ, Japan — no visa needed. For others — Schengen C visa.

Total: ~€150–190 per person.

Car rental

For an independent Iceland trip, a car is essential. Public transport outside Reykjavik is almost non-existent.

Vehicle type€/day (summer)€/day (winter)When needed
Economy 2WD (Toyota Yaris)€55–90€40–70Ring Road + South only
Crossover 2WD (Dacia Duster)€80–130€60–100Same + more comfortable

Large 4WD (Land Cruiser)€200–350€180–280F-roads (highlands summer)
Camper van€150–250Saves on hotels
About insurance. Basic insurance is included, but Iceland is famous for wind and gravel damage — doors get ripped off, windshields smashed. Take extra Gravel Protection (€10/day) and Sand & Ash Protection (€8/day). Without them one minor incident costs €1000+.

Fuel

Iceland fuel prices are among the highest in Europe. In 2026:

10 ways to save money

  1. Cook your own meals. Bónus + guesthouse kitchen saves €30–50/day.
  2. Travel in low season. October, November, February, March — hotels 30–40% cheaper, nature is the same.
  3. N1 hot dog. Local classic, €4 — a satisfying lunch.
  4. Local pools instead of Blue Lagoon. Any municipal pool (Laugardalslaug, Sundhöllin) — €10, no queues, with hot tubs.
  5. Free waterfalls and beaches. 90% of natural attractions cost nothing.
  6. Camping or camper van in summer. Saves on hotels, adds adventure. Iceland Camping Card — €179 for 28 nights at all campsites.
  7. Alcohol — Duty Free or Vínbúðin. Supermarkets don't sell it, bars charge €10+ for beer. Duty Free at arrival is cheapest.
  8. Vínbúðin closes early. If you want alcohol with dinner — buy during the day.
  9. Card pays everywhere — withdrawing cash from ATMs has bad rates.
  10. Tax-free shopping. Purchases over 6,000 ISK (€40) at one store — 14% VAT refund on departure.
