Lofoten is an archipelago in the Norwegian Arctic, about 160 km long. Sharp granite peaks rising straight from the sea, classic fishing villages with red cabins. A rare destination where everything is in one place — mountains, ocean, culture, northern lights or midnight sun depending on the season. 5 days is the minimum for proper coverage.
When to go
- June-July — polar day, 15-22°C, ideal for hiking. No night for 6 weeks straight.
- September — golden autumn, aurora chance from mid-month, quieter.
- February-March — northern lights, snow, white peaks over the sea. Cold (-5/-10°C), little daylight.
- Late October — January — polar night, gloom and storms. Avoid.
Getting there
Main route: fly to Bodø (1.5 hrs from Oslo, €60-120) → ferry to Moskenes (3 hrs, €30 foot / €100 with car). Or fly direct to Leknes / Svolvær — pricier but no ferry.
Car
Rental is essential — public transit between villages is rare and slow. Budget: €60-90/day for compact, €100-150 for 4WD (needed in winter). Book 3-6 months ahead, especially June-July.
Day 1: Arrival + Svolvær
Land in Bodø, ferry to Moskenes, drive east to Svolvær (~2 hrs from ferry). On the way first views of Reinefjorden — stop at Reinebringen either now or next day. Evening dinner in Svolvær (try stockfish — dried cod, Lofoten specialty).
Stay: Svolvær, ideally a rorbu cabin on the water (€150-250/night).
Day 2: Hikes + Henningsvær
Morning: Festvågtind (4 hrs round-trip) — viewpoint right above Svolvær and Henningsvær. Alternative: Djevelporten (3 hrs), the famous "devil's gate" rock.
Afternoon: Henningsvær — the most photogenic village in the archipelago. Klatrekafeen ("climbing café"), bridges between islands, the football pitch in the ocean (you've seen it on Reels). Sunset from Yttersand.
Day 3: Reinebringen + Uttakleiv
Morning (5-6 am, trust me): Reinebringen — 1,980 steps to the classic Reine view. 1.5 hrs up, 1 hr down. Nepalese sherpas built these steps — memorial near the trail. Don't try the old dirt path — it was closed in 2019.
Day: drive across the archipelago to the west (1.5 hrs) to Uttakleiv beach — white sand, emerald water, cliffs. Neighbour Haukland beach — top-10 Europe beach per Lonely Planet.
Evening: Eggum — old military post, coastal trail, "Head" sculpture by Norwegian artist. In the north = midnight sun in summer, sunrise/sunset over the fjord.
Stay: Leknes or Ramberg.
Day 4: Reine + Å + Moskenesøy
Morning: Reine itself — walk the village, café, rorbu photo set.
Day: Bunes beach — take a small ferry from Reine to Vinstad (€20, 25 min), then 1 hr walk. A huge wild beach in a valley between cliffs, usually 5-10 people. The best "secret" beach in Lofoten.
Or alternative: Ryten + Kvalvika beach — the most famous Lofoten hike (3 hrs round-trip). From the Ryten plateau — Kvalvika below looks unreal.
Evening: village of Å — end of E10 road, fishing museum, cathedral-like silence off-season.
Day 5: Unstad + drive back
Morning: Unstad — main Arctic surf spot. Don't surf — just watch the lunatics in wetsuits in 6°C water. You can walk the coastal trail Unstad → Eggum (3-4 hrs) — one of the best on the islands.
Day: drive back to ferry/airport. Stop at things you missed on the way.
Don't miss
- Reinebringen hike (or Mannen if you want easier)
- Henningsvær village
- Uttakleiv + Haukland beaches
- Reine from different angles
- One night in a rorbu
- Try stockfish
