Reykjavik is the world's northernmost capital. Population 130,000, but the metro area is 230,000 (most of the country lives here). The city is walkable, you can cover the center in a day. Below — a hour-by-hour route.
9:00 — Hallgrímskirkja
The country's main church, column shapes inspired by natural basalt columns. 74.5 m tall, visible from anywhere in the center. Take the tower elevator (€15) — view over all of Reykjavik and surrounding mountains. Better early — fewer tourists.
10:00 — Skólavörðustígur
«Rainbow Street» — the main photo location. From Hallgrímskirkja down a street with rainbow paint on asphalt. Local shops, cafés, galleries. Good breakfast: Reykjavík Roasters, Sandholt Bakery.
11:30 — Sun Voyager (Sólfar)
Steel Viking ship sculpture by the sea. One of Reykjavik's most photographed objects. Esja mountains visible across the bay. Free.
12:00 — Harpa
Concert hall of glass hexagons, 2011 architectural masterpiece. Free entry — inside the atmosphere is even better than outside. Café on the ground floor.
13:00 — Lunch
- Bæjarins Beztu Pylsur — legendary hot dog. €5, queue, but worth it. Bill Clinton ate here.
- Messinn — simple seafood, €25-35
- Sægreifinn (Sea Baron) — lobster soup, €18
- Grái Kötturinn — breakfast-café, €15-20
14:30 — Tjörnin (city pond)
Small lake in the center with city hall and Frikirkjan. Ducks, gulls, on a good day you can sit on a bench and just relax. Freezes in winter, kids skate.
15:00 — Museum
Pick one:
- National Museum of Iceland — Iceland from Vikings to today. €20
- Saga Museum — wax figures of saga episodes. €25, vivid
- Settlement Exhibition (871±2) — excavation of Reykjavik's first house. €18
- Punk Museum — in a former public toilet basement, history of Icelandic punk. €15, exotic
17:00 — Local pool
Don't skip — Icelanders spend evenings here. Outdoor pools with hot tubs of various temperatures. Laugardalslaug — biggest (€11). Sundhöllin — center (€11). Towel rental available.
19:00 — Dinner
- Matur og Drykkur — modern Icelandic cuisine, €40-60 per person
- Fiskmarkadurinn — fish market restaurant, €50+
- Bæjarins Beztu Pylsur — again, for those saving
- Hlölla Bátar — local boat-shaped sandwiches, €12-15
21:00 — Bar / walk / aurora
Summer — white nights, walk along the shore. Winter — leave the city for aurora or hit a bar:
- Kaldi — craft brewery
- Lebowski Bar — themed bar with 30+ White Russian variations
- Mikkeller & Friends — Danish craft beer
Where to stay
| Budget | Options | Price |
|---|---|---|

| Mid-range | Center Hotels, CenterHotel Plaza | €150-220/night |
| Premium | Reykjavik Edition, Tower Suites | €350+/night |
Transport
- Center is compact — walking works
- City buses (Strætó) — €5 day pass unlimited
- Aurora bus tour evenings — €60-95
- You DON'T need to rent a car if only Reykjavik
What NOT to do
- Don't go to Blue Lagoon as day trip from city — too long round-trip
- Don't pay for paid toilet if there's an IKEA/mall nearby
- Don't buy souvenirs on Laugavegur — overpriced. Better at Bonus/Krónan for flag/keychain
- Don't drink alcohol after 16:00 thinking Vínbúðin is open — closes early
2 days?
If you have 2 days — day 2: Whales of Iceland museum + Reykjavik Maritime Museum + Sky Lagoon evening (15 min from center). Or day trip to Snæfellsnes (see separate guide).
