October is one of the best months to travel, and somehow the most underrated. The summer heat has eased, the summer crowds have scattered, and lodging and flight prices trend down. NOMAP happens to run three completely different routes in October — from a high-altitude expedition to a laid-back island. Here's who each one is for.
Peru + Bolivia — altitude and culture
October in the Andes is the dry season: clear skies over Machu Picchu, perfect mirror reflections on the Uyuni salt flats, comfortable daytime temperatures. It's the most intense of the three: ancient cities, markets, llamas, altitudes near 4,000 m and scenery you won't find anywhere else.
What to consider: altitude is the main factor — you need acclimatization and an easy first day. The effort is moderate, but thin air adds difficulty. This one is for travelers who want 'another world' and will take a long flight to get there.
Portugal — trekking the ocean
The Fisherman's Trail (Rota Vicentina) runs along Portugal's wild Atlantic coast: paths right above the ocean, empty beaches, fishing villages. October here is mild: comfortable walking temperatures, water still warm, the summer tourist wave gone.
What to consider: this is a genuine multi-day trek with daily stages over sand and rock — you need reasonable fitness and good shoes. In return: one of Europe's most beautiful coastlines, almost empty.
Madeira — the relaxed option
If Peru is intensity and Portugal is effort, Madeira is about balance and pleasure. Eternal spring, walks along levadas through mountains and laurel forest, ocean, wine and food. October is still warm and green — ideal for a comfortable pace.
What to consider: the easiest of the three physically — walks rather than treks (though there are demanding levadas for those who want them). A great pick if you want nature and a reset without altitude or daily forced marches.
Weather and what to consider in October
In short: the Andes are dry and clear but high and cold at night; Portugal is mild warmth and a fresh ocean; Madeira holds a steady 20–24°C and stays green. In all three, October is already low season — fewer people and nicer prices, but limited dates, since our groups are small.
How to choose
Peru + Bolivia — for once-in-a-lifetime impressions, culture and high altitude, if you're up for the flight and the elevation. Portugal — if you love active trekking and the ocean. Madeira — if you want beauty and nature at a calm, comfortable pace.
